The Ben Tre City is famous for being the source of the quote “It was necessary to destroy the village in order to save it”. It was quoted by an American soldier back in the Vietnam War, after the Tet Offensive by the Viet Cong, as the Americans employed overwhelming firepower to rout the Communists, who captured the, then town, regardless of civilian casualties.
In the city, this is the war memorial that commemorating the heroes who participated in the Tet Offensive. Looking at the photos, the uprising was participated by many including women. The Communists boasts a women infantry battalion and a women artillery battalion. More on this in later posts.
